September is Peripheral Artery Disease Awareness Month

September marks Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) Awareness Month, an important time to educate the public about this common but often underdiagnosed condition that affects over 8 million Americans.
What is Peripheral Artery Disease?
PAD occurs when plaque builds up in the arteries that carry blood to your limbs, usually the legs. This narrowing of the arteries reduces blood flow and can cause pain, numbness, and in severe cases, tissue damage.
Warning Signs of PAD
Many people with PAD don't experience symptoms, making regular screenings important. Common warning signs include:
- Leg pain or cramping when walking (claudication)
- Numbness or weakness in the legs
- Coldness in the lower leg or foot
- Sores on toes, feet, or legs that won't heal
- Color changes in the legs
- Hair loss or slower hair growth on feet and legs
- Shiny skin on legs
- Weak pulse in legs or feet
Risk Factors
You may be at higher risk for PAD if you:
- Smoke or have a history of smoking
- Have diabetes
- Have high blood pressure
- Have high cholesterol
- Are over age 60
- Have a family history of PAD or cardiovascular disease
